Music Software NOTION Records "Ooohs" and "Ahhhs" from Greensboro Youth Chorus
October 24, 2005
Music software developer and conductor Dr. Jack Jarrett was blunt when he faced the Greensboro Youth Chorus at the start of a recording session for NOTION software in July 2005.

"This is going to be the most boring thing you've ever done in your life," he told the 20 youngsters in the group.

He explained that the chorus wouldn't sing songs. Instead, for the following three hours they would sing individual notes with specific vowel sounds, such as "ooohs" and "ahhhs."

These recorded notes would be added to the NOTION music software program's library of sounds used in orchestral performances. Jarrett, a noted musician and composer, is developer of NOTION, produced by the Greensboro-based VirtuosoWorks, Inc.

"I thought the kids would be so bored they would melt into the floor," said Ann Doyle, founder and artistic director of the chorus, who directed the unusual performance that night.

"Instead just the opposite happened," she said. "They became excited and interested and began to focus on their singing. As they sang more and more and concentrated on the single pure notes, they got better and better," she said. "We walked out of there a much different and better chorus than when we walked in."

"Dr. Jarrett is a true genius, and he knew that singing all those individual notes would make them better singers," Doyle said. "After three hours those kids knew a lot more about music."

Doyle said the students did not appear to fully understand that night how their unusual vocal performance would be used in NOTION.

"Dr. Jarrett explained all of this to them," she said. "I don't think the kids plugged into it. They probably won't until they hear it performed."

Their first chance to hear their voices on NOTION will be this holiday season, when NOTION will be used to support musicians at the Greensboro Ballet?s productions of The Nutcracker from December 15 to 18.

Dr. Jarrett will conduct the music for the ballet, blending sounds from both live musicians and NOTION.

NOTION, including the voices of the Greensboro Youth Chorus, will be used worldwide in musical concerts, theatrical productions, ballets, operas and similar performances for years to come.

Conductors can use NOTION's pre-recorded music samples to accompany a variety of theatrical productions. The music software's orchestral instrument samples, combined with a unique user-controlled tempo triggering system, NTEMPO, provide arts companies with a powerful and practical performance system, according to officials from VirtuosoWorks.
