A. This is a competition based on artistry and skill; not chance. There is no entry fee to submit your composition, but your entry must comply with the following rules to qualify for prizes.
B. By participating, you agree to these Official Rules and give NOTION Music permission to call you at the phone number you specified even if that number is listed on a state or Federal "do not call" list.
C. The Competition begins at 12:01 a. m. on November 13, 2007 and ends at midnight on May 31, 2008 (the "Competition Period").
D. The composition must be your own original work (no arrangements or collaborations) completed in any software release of NOTION.
E. Your composition must be between five (5) minutes and ten (10) minutes in duration.
F. You enter information and upload your NOTION file by going to our web site at notionmusic.com/contest/entryform.cfm. If you submit more than one composition, only the earliest one received is eligible.
G. You must compose with instrumentation that can be performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Your composition must include at least sixteen (16) seats. There are upper limits to your instrumentation. A composition cannot exceed: Three (3) flutes (3rd flute doubling piccolo), three (3) oboes (3rd oboe doubling English horn), three (3) clarinets (3rd doubling bass clarinet), three (3) bassoons (3rd bassoon doubling contra bassoon), four (4) horns, three (3) trumpets, three (3) trombones (including bass trombone), one (1) tuba, one (1) timpanist, four (4) timpani, three (3) percussionists (including mallets), one (1) harp, one (1) keyboard (piano, celesta). Strings (violins, violas, cellos, basses) do not have an upper limit.
H. You compete against all other contestants for the Grand Prize. However, you compete against peers in one of three Contestant Categories for Finalist and Runner-Up Prizes: 1. Young Composer: You are eighteen (18) years of age or younger on November 13, 2007 (the beginning of the Competition Period) and have never had a composition for sale or rent anywhere in the world by the beginning of the Competition Period. If you eventually do have a work for sale or rent after November 13, 2007, you still remain in this category. 2. Emerging Composer: You are at least nineteen (19) years of age on November 13, 2007 and have never had a composition published by the beginning of the Competition Period. If you eventually do have a work for sale or rent after November 13, 2007, you still remain in this category. 3. Professional: You have had at least one composition published (available to the public for sale or rent) anywhere in the world by November 13, 2007. Publish-for-sale (currently or in the past) is the only criterion; age is not a factor in this category. If all your published works are removed from sale or rent after the beginning of the Competition Period, you still remain in this category.
I. For the purposes of this contest, you are considered "Published" if at least one of your compositions, on electronic or print media, has ever been for sale or rent anywhere in the world and promoted through a third-party, such as (but not limited to) a publisher, theatrical rights group, or recording label, as a printed score or a recording of the piece as a track or soundtrack on physical medium, such as a CD or DVD. You are not considered published if the sole means for the public to access your composition is through self-promotion at any location or web site, including submissions to NOTION Music's Performance Repertoire, sibeliusmusic.com, or similar site. Performances of your work, even at events charging admission, do not constitute publication. However, if a CD of a performance goes on sale or rent at any time afterwards by a for-profit business, then you are considered published.
J. Composers featured in Vibrato, the NOTION Music newsletter, and other professional and amateur composers and musicians are eligible to enter.
K. Employees of NOTION Music and members of their immediate family (spouse, parents, and children) are ineligible.
A. One (1) Grand Prize, the winner may be from any of the Contestant Categories. The Grand Prize is a recording of the winning
contestant's composition by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, London, England, a trip to London for the
recording (the "Recording Trip"), and $2,500 in cash. The Recording Trip consists of business class round trip airfare to London (on
airline(s) specified by NOTION Music) for one (1) winning composer and one (1) traveling companion departing from and returning to
the major airport closest to his or her residence and two (2) nights accommodations for one (1) winning composer and one (1)
traveling companion in London (at single room, double-occupancy accommodations specified by NOTION Music). All other expenses
are the responsibility of the Grand Prize winner.
Estimated value is $25,000. The actual value of Grand Prize depends on the point of departure and return of the winning composer
traveling to and from London. The London Symphony Orchestra shall specify the time and date of the Recording Session and
NOTION Music shall specify the time and date of the winning composer's departure and return.
B. Three (3) Finalist Prizes for one (1) winner from each of the three (3) Contestant Categories. Each of the three (3) Finalist Prizes
consists of $ 1,000.00 in cash.
C. Nine (9) Runner-Up Prizes for three (3) winners from each of the three (3) Contestant Categories. Each of the nine (9) Runner-Up
winners is able to select five (5) NOTION sound kits of their own choosing. Value of each Runner-Up Prize depends on the sound kits
selected and the shipping costs to the winner's specified address.
D. NOTION Music reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.
E. Odds of winning the Grand Prize depend on the total number of entries received and the quality of your entry as compared to the
quality of the entries of all other contestants as determined by the Panel.
F. Odds of winning a Finalist Prize or a Runner-Up Prize depend on the number of entries received in your Contestant Category and the
quality of your entry as compared to the quality of the other entries in your Contestant Category as determined by the Panel.
A. To enter the Realize Music Challenge, you upload your composition in NOTION file format from your hard drive to NOTION Music by going to http://www.notionmusic.com/contest/entryform.cfm.
B. Your entry must be received by NOTION Music no earlier than 12:01 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on November 13, 2007 and no later than midnight (EDT) on May 31st, 2008.
C. At the time you upload your file, you must provide information about yourself so we can contact you if the Panel selects you for a prize. Fields that do not have an asterisk (*) are optional. You may be disqualified if you fail to provide accurate information about your age at the start of the Competition Period or if you have ever had a composition for sale or rent as of the start of the Competition Period.
D. If your address, phone number, email address, or name changes after you submit your entry, email NOTION Music at rmc@notionmusic.com. It is your responsibility to (1) inform us you have a change in contestant information for the Realize Music Challenge, (2) include what the original information was and (3) what the new information is.
E. NOTION Music is not responsible for incorrect, inaccurate or incomplete information or entry of information; lost, stolen, late, or misdirected entries; destruction or alteration of entries; unauthorized access to entries; human error, technical malfunction, delay in operation or transmission, lost data, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, communications line failure, computer or server equipment failure, software failure, inability to access to email service, or any other error or malfunction, or any entries that for any reason are not received by NOTION Music within the Competition Period.
F. Proof of sending an entry is not deemed to be proof of receipt by NOTION Music.
A. Judges selected by NOTION Music (the "Panel") will select the grand prize winner, 3 finalists, 9 runner-ups, and 3 alternates from
among all eligible entries submitted.
B. The Panel of Judges will select the following:
1. Grand Prize. From among all eligible entries submitted, the Grand Prize will be selected from any of the three (3)
Contestant Categories.
2. Finalists and Runner Ups: After selection of the Grand Prize Winner, the Panel will select twelve (12) finalists, four (4) from
the Young Composer contestant category, four (4) from the Emerging Composer contestant category and four (4) from the
Professional contestant category. One (1) in each category wins the Finalists prize. The remaining three (3) in each category win
a Runner-Up Prize.
3. Alternates: The Panel will also select an alternate prize winner in each category, as a backup in case a Finalist or Runner Up
prize cannot be awarded.
C. To decide between compositions of nearly equal quality, the Panel will rank competing scores on how performance ready each score
is to place before performers in the London Symphony Orchestra. For this reason, you improve your chances of winning if you
check your score for performance considerations such as (but not limited to): do all notes fall within instrument ranges? Did you
include correct bowing for strings and breathing considerations for winds? Are dynamics, accents, articulations, expressive marks,
and similar score markings used appropriately?
A. NOTION Music will notify each winner by certified mail, return receipt requested, addressed to the address provided with the entry of
his or her composition.
B. Before receiving any prize and as a condition of receiving a prize, each winner (1) will be required to provide (a) a valid photo
identification substantiating the winner's name and address as it appeared on the entry form, (b) his or her social security number
(if a United States citizen, for tax purposes) and (c) date of birth and (2) will sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and Public Relations and
Liability Release supplied by NOTION Music, which, among other things, permits NOTION Music to use winners pictures and bios,
and audio files of the winning compositions, in announcing this year's winners and in promoting future Realize Music Challenge
competitions - and releases NOTION Music and its directors, officers, agents and employees from any and all liability related to
the Competition and the Prizes. The winner may be required to sign other legal documents (including tax forms) or show additional
proof of eligibility.
C. The winner must return these documents no later than 30 days from date of receipt of notification. If the winner fails to sign and
return the documents within 30 days of receipt of notification, or fails to meet any eligibility requirements, or submits false information
that determined eligibility in a inappropriate Contestant Category, an alternate winner (determined by the judges) will receive the prize.
The alternate winner is subject to all eligibility requirements and restrictions of these Official Rules.
D. Contestants retain rights to their compositions. Although entries submitted to the Competition do not become the property of
NOTION Music, winners must agree to audio file posting and other terms specified in Letter B, above, to receive prizes.
E. NOTION Music retains the right to amend the Competition's rules or awards at any time without prior notice. The Competition is
subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
