Grand Prize Winner
Inal Bilsel
Inal Bilsel
London, UK
Listen to Inal's composition, Nilay's Dream, as played by the London Symphony Orchestra
Composing since he was 17 years of age, Inal Bilsel finds deadlines as his biggest challenge - but also his biggest motivation. "I love composing even if I know it won't be performed or I will not be paid," said Inal, "it is rather an enjoyment for me." He finds a number of rewards being a composer. "For me even a short performance of my work is very satisfying. Recognition is perhaps a composer's biggest reward."
Young Composers Finalist
Inal Bilsel
Lucas Porter
Nova Scotia, Canada
Listen to Lucas Porter's composition, Port Williams Overture
A resident of Port Williams, Lucas became interested in composing only a year previous to the
Realize music Challenge. With the goal to become a concert pianist, Lucas has already earned
awards such as the President's Cup from the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival and the Most
Outstanding Pianist several years running at the Annapolis Valley Music Festival. Also, this
promising artist has performed with the Nova Sinfonai and Chebucto Symphony Orchestra.
Emerging Composers Finalist
Inal Bilsel
Nathaniel Daw
Leongatha, Australia
Listen to Nathaniel Daw's composition, The Guardian; Movement 1
Nathaniel created his first composition when he was eleven after his piano teacher asked all
her students to compose a short piece. He's come a long way: working towards a Bachelor
of Multimedia Systems at Monash University during the first Realize Music Challenge. In
addition to piano this emerging composer plays tuba, electric and double bass and drums.
He hopes his compositions will "help all people to learn and enjoy orchestral music."
Professional Finalist
Inal Bilsel
Ian Cugley
Dorset, UK
Listen to Ian Cugley's composition, Ritual
After receiving his Bachelor of Music Degree at the University of Sydney, Ian went to lecture in
Music and computing at the University of Tasmania. Ian gained early recognition for his work,
mostly in chamber pieces. Two large orchestral works, Pan, the Lake and Prelude for Orchestra,
have been performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He claims there are no rewards
for composing, describing it as an "addiction. The process is its own reward." But Ian adds, "well the applause is nice."
